I have to ask for paper bags when I go to the store. Everything is bagged in plastic. I have recently started shopping at a store that sells grocery bags that I now use. They are some sort of fabric that is very strong, and they don't rip from the corners of cereal boxes, milk cartons, etc. I bring them to the store with me and ask the bagger to use them. I only use paper bags for my paper recycling, which has to be put to the curb in paper bags.

Just about all US grocery store / supermarkets use plastic. Often they have both to pick from. Paper looks better on TV / movies
Watching movies is no way to view reality. I don't think there's any movie or TV show that depicts reality any more. We laugh and point at how stupid writers of shows are these days. They don't seem to be up to date on anything. It's pretty funny really.
Actually it's very rare these days for anyone to use paper bags for groceries. Those were popular in the 60's and 70's.
The most popular way to carry groceries these days is to use those thin recyclable plastic bags. They're very durable and reusable and hold quite a bit of weight.
They're absolutely perfect for carrying groceries, so they'll probably be banned soon.
Many grocery stores are now offering the plastic carrier bags. (Trader Joes, costco, Nugget Markets) Stores still offer and ask if you prefer plastic or paper. Both can be recycled and are already made up of recycled material. Paper bags are great because they are biodegradable. Some cities have outlawed plastic bags all together, San Francisco being one.
All stores give a choice between paper or plastic. American movies arent a good way to pick up on american culture, lol!
