How can supporting a strong military work with a smaller federal government?

Should the idea of "American conservatism" be supporting a strong military which makes a stronger (bigger) federal government? How can supporting a strong military work with a smaller federal government?A strong military is a necessity if you wish to retain sites like these where one can ask such questions. Good luck to youHow can supporting a strong military work with a smaller federal government?
I suspect that lost in all of the BS-ing is the reality of the situation. 'Government' should neither be 'big' or 'small'. Government needs to be of an appropriate size to accomplish all of the missions that are necessary in a 21st century, first world, very complex industrial country. We certainly can argue about what that is, but we always have to give a lot of thought to the results of eliminating or adding responsibilities. This isn't 'opinion' or ideology...we live in a world ruled by science and reason...ignoring science and reason leads to bad outcomes. Incorporation of science and reason leads to the greatest good for the greatest number. As far as our military is concerned it's currently well set up to re fight WW2, but it isn't the military we need and worst, at 800 billion borrowed dollars a year it's way too expensive to maintain. We're a sea and air power....we're not a land power. Maintaining dozens of overseas bases and fighting two wars is only adding expense to expense and it's not making this country any safer. To the extent we can eliminate this bloated military we can make the government 'smaller'. The old USSR went belly up trying to maintain a military machine that was far too big for the economy that supported it....there's no reason for us to go down that same road. None! How can supporting a strong military work with a smaller federal government? We had a strong military well before we had things like the department of energy, department of education and the department of health/human services.....

We can have a strong military without doing things the Original Constitution says....How can supporting a strong military work with a smaller federal government?
How does eviscerating the military work with a large leftist government?

Oh wait, I misspoke....

How DID eviscerating the military work with a large leftist government? How can supporting a strong military work with a smaller federal government?Having a strong military does not necessarily mean a government has to be large. Its many of the other programs and wasteful spending that grows government. How can supporting a strong military work with a smaller federal government?
The first role of government is to provide a common defense. Not to re distribute income.
