I had five pen pals during my last tour. Over a year of talking to one of them, another year of visiting her, we got married.
Overall, it depended on the person. Two were good at talking about things, one younger one was just curious about things and didn't not seem to be interesting in details, one was more interested in telling me about himself and his XBox.
Something I have noticed in general over several years is that people share their feeling with two people, someone they know extremely well, or somebody they do not know at all.
