Im from australia and i see alot of american movies
Is school really like it is in the movies?
Do you eat lunch at a cafeteria and is there lots of like groups - like the nerd group and popular group?
Is the quarterback the hottest guy and the cheerleader the hottest girl?
hahah|||Lol I like this question...well I live in Hollywood, and I go to Hollywood high but belive me its not all white-rich-ppl-ish, its a preforming arts school so the majority of the ppl are very colorful and loud and talented and the school is very ethnically diverse. There are cliques, but how can I put this....nobody follows them lol, take me as an example I am on varsity basketbal player so I get allong w. All the jocks guys and girls and most of my friends all play some type of sport, but at the same time most of us are gifted or are taking ap classes. And I'm a safe school ambasador
And half the girls on my team r also dancers lmao!!! Hollywood is great!!! Everyone feels welcome and nobody is really considered weird, yeah we have a coupple of transvestites, and ppl w. Crazy hair colors(I myself had fiery red currly hair)we have ppl who act and dance in the quad and we have a lot of gay/lesbian/bi ppl too. We're crazy teenagers, nobody gets bugged much. But then again that's just hollywood high.....
Ohhh yeah.....hollywoood dosent like their cheerleaders...lmao!!!!|||I live in Canada but our cultures are very similar. At my school, a small private school everybody pretty much gets along. But the public schools do have cliques, there are the jock types and popular girls. You hang out with who you feel comfortable with.
What is school like in Australia?|||hahaha i have always thought the same thing, im also from australia and always dreamed of going to school in america!!
Cant wait to read the answers!|||Hah! I'm from Australia too. Whenever I think of American schools I think of Mean Girls. How the school is set out lol I really want to go there for a year but I can't lol
I think most of the American people are asleep because of the time differences.|||Okay...I'm just answering this based on my school so I can't tell you how true these answers are, but I hope I can help some....
At my school, we eat in the cafeteria or outside it in the patio area.
My school doesn't really have groups. Sure....you can stereotype people (which is kind of stupid), and pretty much everyone knows everyone (I live in a small town).
No. The quarterback is not the hottest guy and the cheerleaders aren't the hottest girls.
Hope that helped some.|||Usually the groups are defined on income and how one dresses, as shallow as it sounds.|||I wasn't exactly what you meant by "like in the movies", but the thing about eating in a cafeteria and having lots of group is pretty much how it really is in American schools. Misguided as it may be, yes, if the stars of the football team happen to also be good looking, they tend to get a lot of admiration. Girl cheerleaders do too.
It's been a while since I went to school; but the way it was then (and probably is now) was that there was a "super in-crowd" that had a "peripheral" in-crowd around it (they were more "mainstream" than the "hot" football guy and the most admired cheerleader, so they made up the "general" in-crowd). Then there would be (maybe the largest group) the "non-descript" kids, who were neither "in" nor "out" and that one, big, "non-descript" group would be broken down into smaller groups of friends.
Then there were two levels of "out" kids - "out" but not "way out", and "so far out that other people often made fun of them". The "so far outs" didn't like anybody else, and all hung around together.
Then there were the "tough nuts" - "tough" guys and their female counterparts. They were a group that all hung around only with others in their group too. They were the ones that tended to drop out of school; although occasionally one or two would shape up and become an "in" crowd person.
It wasn't quite as clique-ish as it may seem, because the non-descripts tended to be the largest percentage of the class; and there was sometimes over-lap between the "low end, peripheral, in-crowd" kids; the "non-descripts", and the "high-end 'out" crowd.
(and they say everyone in America is "equal"...... :) )
One other note, though: In general, it was pretty common for those "high-end in-crowd" kids to peak in high school and end up having high school the high point of their lives; while kids from more mainstream groups "blossomed" later.
In general, the so-far-outs and the tough kids didn't do very well or "blossom" later at all.|||Yeah except for the cheerleader and quarterback part, there are usually better looking people in my school. And if no other Americans answer it's because it's 4:53 a.m here in America.|||honestly, that was mostly in middle school and junior high (5th through 8th grades) and the groups were generally bigger than in the movies, but the same basic idea. Yes, we ate in the cafeteria In high school everyone merged together and got over it and we had off campus lunch.|||maybe for some schools, but not ours, our school is divided by groups yes, but from what i hear other school aren't. NO groups are not determined by income, some preps(they're people who wear the latest fashion) are poor. I'm under gamers and my family makes more than those posers|||Things shouldn't be like that. But, That is usually how they turn out, her in the U.S.|||Lol ya it is like that i guess? the football players are always really popular, and the cheerleaders are too, they are also the girls that are the most beautiful. there are many social groups and if you are in one group you do NOT dare to talk to someone out side your group. We do eat lunch in a cafeteria? (where else would we eat)? I guess the movies are correct. This all seems so normal to me. Im curious as to what other countries school's are like?|||I'm from America. Most schools eat in a cafeteria, there are several groups besides the nerds and popular, and the quarterback isn't always the hottest guy, cheerleader not hottest girl|||Movies are exaggerated entertainment. From the action parts in it to the outcomes that in reality, rarely happen.
So, my answer is no.
I am an American, went to public school from kindergarten to senior year in high school in California.
Not all schools will have that "valley girl cheerleader" ..(lyke omg, so totally) who always dates the high school football team.
Not all football players are cute and hot. Not all football players are straight either.
EVERY school, no matter if in America or in another country is going to have clicks.
Clicks are groups: Popular, geek/annoying, gothic/alternative, mean/rude, **** kickers (cowboys/cowgirls), tree huggers (military ROTC: whether marines, army, navy, airforce) and the list goes on.
I refused to be a part of just one group. My personality is not just one person or one thing. So I had friends from every group and hanged out with every group on different breaks and lunches.
Eating: I sometimes ate at the caffeteria, most of the time I ate in a place called the "quad". (cuz the brick walls has four sides covering the 2 acres of grass/trees to eat). where all my friends was sitting, playing around/goofying around etc.
Other times my senior year, I would go somewhere to eat because I had classes at the adult school (law enforcement) in the mornings then drive to my normal high school in the afternoon time. (Good kids with grades got to compet for these sort of adult classes offered and only a certain amount would be picked from every school) in our area.
What you see in the movies CAN happen, but don't assume it always does as a tradition or it happens in that sort of way. Not all freshman get dump in the dumpster nor does all Seniors drive fancy cars.|||in my middle school, it is basically like that. There are groups, but not just one table of Populars, One table of Nerds, etc. There are many tables, and they get mixed in. My grade is split into teams (3) so i only really know my team, but I know that their is a popular group that my ex-bff is in on another team. There are usually the guys on the football and basketball team who are popular. Yes, most of the cheerleaders are popular. But the most popular girl in my school (who has gone out with like 8 guys just this school year) isn't a cheerleader. So is the most popular girl of another team. They also tend to be ditzy and not smart (no offense). There are other people who are actually popular (a lot of people like them) but not "cool" (so they don't get all the guys). Most of my friends are like that. This is just my school, so I don't know about others, but it is a lot like it seems in movies, except that the popular girls don't wear short skirts and belly tops and don't always have a snarl on her face. The popular guys aren't that ful of themselves. Everyone just tries to laugh, and they just end up looking flawless. It can't be that different from Australia.|||not really in my school
i go to school in nyc and people just hang out with who ever they want to
yea ppl are in groups but its not specificly nerds and popular ppl
and not every one in my school gets pregnant and has sex and does drugs|||I live in New Jersey, which is, if you didn't know, in America. Ha-ha, and yes. There are loners, nerds, populars, goths, and all that. We eat in a big cafeteria and every group has a table [well, somewhat] and you go outside after lunch. The quarterback is not the HOTTEST, though he does date the cheerleader, most of the time.|||Yeah, basically. Yes, we eat lunch in the cafeteria, and there are lots of groups, but the quarterback and cheerleader aren't ALWAYS the hottest.|||Obviously they don't teach common sense where you go to school. No, school in the U.S. is not like it is in the movies. Yes there are "cliques" but it is not quite like the movies...don't forget the movies are FANTASIES and exaggerate reality. In some schools the hottest guy on campus is the nerd, it depends upon WHERE one grows up. When I was in school the hottest guy on campus was my oldest brother and all of my female friends wanted to be my friend because he was hot...He was very much a "nerd" interested in math and science, he was on the Track and golf teams in high school., The hottest girl when I was in school was the girl who was usually the lead in all of the school plays.
Right now my 11 year old daughter is the hottest girl in her high school (yes I said high school) She has an IQ of 165 and skipped two grades between elementary and middle school. The hottest guy I understand is on the school wrestling team.|||Uhm...sort of. Yes we eat lunch in a cafeteria. The quarterback isn't always the hottest guy. I don't even know who the heck our quarterback is. Lol! Yeah, the cheerleaders will always be "the cheerleaders". Haha. There are a lot of groups, but I don't particularly belong to one. I get along with everybody :D
The groups aren't as bad in high school as they are in middle school. In high school, it's like everybody gets along with everybody. (In mine it's that way...) But in middle school...it just has a lot more drama. Lol.|||i live in America and i guess it is kinda like the movies. we have a nerd group, jock group, drama group, popular group, band group..and just the other people if you dont fall in one of them catagories. at my school the quarterback is not the hottest guy and the head cheerleader the hottest girl...but to answer the question it is kinda like the movies.|||at my school kinda except for the cheerleaders and football players. like at lunch people would sit with each other which ususallly causes cliques. but they dont really matter that much cause in the hallways everyone pretty much hang put with each other.|||yes thats how it is most of the time except i wouldn't say the quarterback and cheerleaders are the hottest but the most popular yes..
arggh im a cheerlearder and moving to australia soon and i heard there are no cheerleaders there!!! ughh im really really going to miss cheerleading.
):
ps. not all the cheerleaders are popular, but most.
do they even have popular people in australia? if not, im really going to miss the competition.
anyway, theres the jock group, the nerds, the skaters, the emos, the preps(popular girls), the gangsters..etc. and yes the different groups sit together at lunch..how is it in australia?
and you live in a rich town like i do...the preps wear ALOT of expensive designer clothes...
EDIT: woah wait a second...you don't eat lunch in a cafeteria? where do you eat lunch?|||sometimes
in our school, there is no cafeteria and we eat lunch in our class (homeroom)
there is a nerd table, an emo table and the cool table (which is almost 60% of the class)|||they are but they aren't. there are a lot of cliques. There are the cheerleaders the hot football players then guys that play lesser sports like hockey baseball basketball soccer and track. then the girls on the dance team. then there are the people that have some popular friends but others not so much. Then there are the band geeks (ME!!!!!!!!) that have their band friends and then few friends outside of it.
BTW cheerleaders are all bitches i was one myself once then i quit for marching band. best choice i ever made. the people in marching band are the nicest group of people ever (at least at my school) and some you would never guess they were a part of it. the band is like a family you may not fit in anywhere else but your excepted here.|||OK, Im from america new york to be exact and well all the schools in america arent like the ones in the movies
however dependin on where you live they might be.
As far as I know most schools eat lunch in a cafeteria
and most schools have groups that sit together.
for example:
in my school there is the
emos
punk-rockers
preps
nerds
skaters
jocks(cheerleaders,football,basketball… lacross)
other jocks
Popular kids( although jock table is mostley filled with the popular kids)
and
the weird kids who just sit by themselves,
i personally sit in the popular/jock section since im a cheerleader and all
well in my school the cheerleaders get the most attention from guys other school may not, but then again im only going on stuff based on my school.
however i have to say in my school i think the quaterback is pretty hott ;)|||not at all. i go to a public high school with over 4000 kids. i think we probably have seven quarterbacks and none of them are all that attractive. and same with the cheerleaders. there isn't one "in" group. there are so many different groups almost anyone can find people to be friends with. and many people are friends with multiple groups. now there are groups of people who would fit the popular stereotype as far as dress and attitude goes, but they're only popular among themselves. there isn't any specific guy everyone wants to get with or vice versa. everyone is friends with the people they want to be friends with. there are still parties and things. but there are so many of almost every group and so many people that overlap that it's not like the movies at all.|||Well, my school didn't really have a cafeteria, there were tables that folded out of the wall in our lobby. In recent years, kids can go outside to eat lunch if the weather's nice as long as they stay on school property.
There wasn't really a 'popular' group, or any other group. There were kids that were more popular than others, and the athletes liked to hang out together and the drama/music/art kids liked to hang out together and the Sudanese refugees (no, seriously, I think these two families must have adopted half of Sudan by now) and their adoptive siblings and soccer buddies liked to hang out together and the kids that did nothing interesting or special would sort of hang out together in a couple large groups, but the groups weren't well-defined and they didn't hate each other. There were a couple 'outcast' kids, like the obnoxious, unwashed kid who was a 'third-year senior' (ie, this was his sixth year in high school) and the obnoxious, unwashed eighth-grade girl he was dating, but they'd spend all their time sitting on a bench making out and feeling each other up so they probably didn't even notice that most people avoided them.
The quarterback was not the hottest guy, and the cheerleaders were girls who were all not athletic enough to get on a real sports team. There weren't a lot of 'hot guys', and all the 'hot girls' played volleyball, and then everyone ran track and cross-country. Heck, one of our runners even made it to the Olympics last year =) so he became the ultimate 'cool kid' and he's totally not hot at all.
Oh, and yes, this is a public (that means it's government-sponsored, and you don't have to pay tuition - most American schools are this way) school.|||I can't exactly represent the country cause I'm from small town Iowa :)
But yeah, there's cliques. Nobody says that's the "nerd" or "popular" table. There's just unspoken boundaries. If you actually use the term popular, it pretty much means you're on the outside. At our school, it's not a huge deal if you talk to someone outside of your group. Personally, I can get along with most kids. But you don't hang out with them all the time. No, the quarterback isn't necessarily the best looking guy, nor the head cheerleader the best looking girl. But there is a sense of pride that they hold. Most of our school's cheerleaders aren't good looking at all. Remember, football players and their cheerleaders are only important in the fall. It's an athlete thing. Of course Hollywood dramatizes high school. But, yeah, it's coming from a real place :)
I can't imagine anything different... There aren't cliques in your school?|||Um, I'm American, I thought schools were like that everywhere? what is it like in Australia??|||Well... it all depends on the school. At my school. The quaterback is popular but he isn't the most and the cheerleader isn't the hottest girl but everyone knows her. The cafeteria has their own distinct groups but other people join them. Also I can tell you one thing that doesn't happen is the football players being mean to the nerds or kids getting shoved in lockers. Atleast not at my school (public high school with 5000 kids).
