I don't want to offend anyone but i live in Britain and am quite curious as to whether cheerleaders(only wear their cheerleading uniform and are horrible?), jocks(only wear their uniform?), geeks(i don't like using that word), skaters, goths, music people, art people etc. only hang out in their cliques and with nobody else? Are schools really like movies with a horrible mean popular group and then one particular girl and boy who everybody lusts after? And then there's lots of sex and parties and dating? Also how does the american school system work?
Thank you
:)Are american high schools really how they are portrayed in movies? In the movies, the stuff is accurate, but highly exaggerated. The jocks and cheerleaders don't always wear their uniforms every single day....some of them are nasty, but a lot of them are just normal people. And yeah, there are cliques, and it's hard to make friends outside of cliques. The horrible mean popular group....There are mean cliques, but they don't really plot out ways to make people miserable...they just make you feel like crap by insulting you on the spot and social exclusion. There aren't really particular girls that everyone lusts after, it's more the girls lusting after the boys. And it's not usually one particular person, there are lots of attractive guys that everyone wants to date. As for the american school system....It definitely varies from school to school. Some of them are really strict, and others are very laidback. Are american high schools really how they are portrayed in movies?
NO NO NO NO NO NO NO!!! its not like that. or atleast mine isnt. Are american high schools really how they are portrayed in movies?hell no
Yes that is all correct except the uniform part. They only wear them when it's a gameday or homecoming. Are american high schools really how they are portrayed in movies? Some are like this, but the movies certainly exaggerate it.
My HS was fairly large. There were some cliquey people, but for the most part people hung out with who they liked. There was a large mix of race and culture. Are american high schools really how they are portrayed in movies?
everytime i see a gaggle of high school kids now, they all look identical! my high school was more like the movie 'dazed and confused' but in the 90s--everyone got along and partied together and hung out. it was so much fun. you had your cliques, but the lines were blurred.
Not much in the movies portray any truths about America. Even things based on true stories are sensationalized to make them more entertaining. I'm not sure I understand what you mean by how do our school systems work though. Are american high schools really how they are portrayed in movies?
I think to a certain extent they are like that.
My high school wasnt exactly like that. There are different cliques but in my high school there was no cheerleader/jock popular crowd that everyone hated.
those movies are NOT a great example of american schools. you just have to tone back the exaggerations. all of those stereotypical things you see in those movies are about 100x what really happens....and it's not across the boards. there IS definitely some truth to it, but nowhere NEAR the same degree that you see in movies.
i'd be willing to bet that it's similar to the behavior of kids in the UK. adolescents DO find comfort in cliques. doesn't matter where you're from
There are no cliques. That's an illusion.
People who purposefully have a small group of people that they will talk to, and nobody else, are incredibly weak.
The world isn't for cliques. Every man for himself.
Every women for herself and four friends? Don't think so.
No. It is extremely exaggerated in movies.
No it's not like that. In big cities like New York, LA, or Houston you wont find cliques like that. I don't really know about small towns but I have never come across people as conceited as they show in the movies.
No, it's nothing like that really. I am one of the smartest people in my classes, and I am well known, and sort of popular. The cheerleader thing is a complete lie, and the classifications are not that distinct. You can't tell straight up who is an athlete, who is a cheerleader, who is emo, and blah, blah, blah.
No. American movies are very exaggerated and they want to tell a story. They emphasize the negatives, and exaggerate them to sell their plot about the poor boy or girl who is their main Character.
The truth is that kids are cruel to one another, but actual drug use and violent crime only exists in the background. Everyone knows it's out there, but they don't brag about it around school.
Cheerleaders, jocks, and "nerds" are people trying to find their slot in life. They certainly go about it differently, but you can find shy cheerleaders and confident nerds as well as the typical of these clicks.
People do have out in clicks, but it isn't something that they mean to do. It is human nature to find people who think a like to make friends that last, and to get through school.
In the movies, the kids have a lot of free time at high school, but in real life, the poor high school kids really don't have much time to hang in their clicks. They feel like they are studying all the time at school. That is why some of them don't do homework. They feel "I've put in a hard day at school, now they want me to do some work after school too? Are they crazy?"
I have not noticed the lust factor so much. Sure, some boys comment about how hot a girl is, but it isn't just one girl. Kids are people too, and so each has his or her own tastes.
No-- I knew some cheerleaders in high school, and they were very nice.
Cheerleaders and 'jocks' only wear their outfits on game days. American high school is nothing like the movies. It's still bad but not as bad as depicted on TV.
LOL! No! Do you know ANYTHING in real that is realistically portrayed in most movies?
Yes, many schools have cliques - but the dividing lines are more vague and various cliques are more friendly to each other than movies suggest.
Yes, many schools do have several mean snobs who consider themselves "popular", but who are really disliked by many people - the whole popularity structure is not as clear or rigid or universal as it seems. Movies just simplify it to make a point, to give the protagonist a villian to struggle against. Movies portray the "feel" of high school, not the reality.
The cheerleaders and jocks only wear their uniforms during practice and games; they are not always the most beautiful or most popular people in the school, nor does the head cheerleader always date the quarterback. There may be a few good-looking individuals that most students lust after, but the admiration is not universal.
Yes, some school have a lot of sex and parties and dating, and even gangs and violence, but many don't. There are a lot of other things that go on in high school - it just isn't entertaining to watch on screen, so that's why you don't see it in the movies. Imagine someone videotaped the next 24 hours of your life - which bits would you edit out?
